Memoirs of an EVERYMAN – Who cares? – Why bother? Memoirs and autobiographies occupy shelf space in most bookstores (new and used). Peruse those shelves and find books by well know politicians, scientists, entertainers, professional athletes and other “luminaries”. While the content of those life histories may be interesting, how many who read them can relate to the lives of such prominent individuals? It would be far easier to identify with the memoir or autobiography of an EVERYMAN like ourselves…..
Music, Courage, Personal Choice, and Contentment When something apparently important happens, or a prominent person does something (even if their action is not so important), it becomes news. It might even become a Twitter hash tag or even a meme. However, there are countless “not so important” people, who accomplish amazing things with little fanfare that have a significant impact on the lives of individuals. They act solely for the benefit of others, seeking neither praise nor public recognition. On…..
Star light, Star Bright, First star I see tonight, Wish I may, Wish I might, Have that wish, I wish tonight. This little poem is immortalized in film by Disney Studios and in song by Lynda Scott, “Westnocentrically” speaking of course. There’s nothing inherently wrong with wishing on a star; it’s just that this poem represents a blatant example of early indoctrination into the practice of wishing and wanting . It’s not the wishing that’s the problem, it’s the…..
Recently my wife has remarked, “You seem so contented all the time.” Her remark is significant for two reasons; first, after 47 years of marriage, she knows me better than anyone does, and second, she knows I have not always been such a contented person. Three years ago, if you asked me to suggest an image of contentment, I might have responded with, a contented cow grazing peacefully in a field Infantor an infant cradled contentedly in his mother’s arm……
To Subtitle or not to Subtitle, That is the Question? Once I had settled on the title, Through a Lens of Emptiness, the question of including a subtitle became an issue. To subtitle or not to subtitle, that was the question (Sorry William!)? The title is designed to capture the attention of a potential reader. The purpose of a subtitle is to inform him or her about the essence of a book’s content. The idea of a lens of emptiness…..
Emptiness and Competitive Dance – Not a Contradiction When someone writes a book titled Through a Lens of Emptiness, that lens becomes a primary tool for examining his day-to-day life experience, so today I turn that lens on competitive dance. From April 23 to 26, Flashdance Canada held a scheduled competition at the Ron Joyce Theatre at Hamilton Place. My wife and I were in attendance to watch our youngest granddaughter compete, and also to watch the competition as a…..
Project Biosphere – Earth Day 1990, Then and Now Sunday, April 22, 1990 and Project Biosphere is fully implemented. Their slogan, Our Time is Now, is displayed prominently on hand silk screened tee shirts. Students from the Environment Club at Lord Elgin High School (renamed Robert Bateman) and some others from the neighbouring Middle School are gathered before an impromptu stage where teachers, administrators and city councilmen formally dedicate Project Biosphere. Project Biosphere was the end result of a…..
One must learn to walk before they can run. Oh, how true that is! Although I have been blogging forma while at www.dome-of-heaven.com, there is so much to learn. I’m working with a Social Media publicist now, and doing my best to follow his advice. That means redoing the posts on this blog one by one. The first post was redone and reposted today. It looks much better than the first iteration. I won’t be adding anything new for about…..
The last three blog posts are extensions of material found in Through a Lens of Emptiness. Interesting, but perhaps too cerebral. In truth, cerebral writing is just as hard on the reader as the blogger. It’s time to get real, so I’ll write about memory prompts, memory storage and memory retrieval as my day unfolded today, April 15, 2015. The day began as usual with coffee, a daily morning conversation with my wife about various and sundry things, and…..
The primary title of my book, Through a Lens of Emptiness, seems to grab the attention of people when they see its cover design, and that’s a good thing because that was the intent. It wasn’t the title of the first draft, nor did it come to mind without some prompting. The mental prods that pushed my mind in the direction of Emptiness as the title concept came from two sources. The first came during a conversation with George N,…..
